Professor Katherine Sleeman is the Laing Galazka Chair in Palliative Care, based at the Cicely Saunders Institute, King's College London, and a consultant in Palliative Medicine at King's College Hospital NHS Trust.
Katherine leads a programme of research that uses mixed methods to understand and improve care for people approaching the end of life, particularly for people with dementia. She is the academic lead for the Marie Curie 'Better End of Life' programme. From 2016-2021 she held a National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Clinician Scientist Fellowship, the first-ever awarded in palliative medicine. Prior to her NIHR Clinician Scientist Fellowship, she was a Cicely Saunders International Scholar (2015-2016) and an NIHR Clinical Lecturer (2010-2015), both based at King's. She has a PhD in cell biology from the Institute of Cancer Research, London.
In 2019 Katherine received the inaugural Women in Palliative Care award from the European Association of Palliative Care for work exploring gender bias in academic palliative care. In 2020 she received a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust travel fellowship to explore public and policy engagement in palliative care.
